Read Matthew 27
Think About It:
- Why did the Sanhedrin give Jesus over to Pontius Pilate, the Roman appointed governor over Judea?
- Why did Judas throw the 30 pieces of silver at the Priest’s feet in the temple? What is the difference between remorse and repentance?
- In verses 15-18, Pilate wishes to release a prisoner to the people and hopes that they release Jesus. This is out of character for Pilate. Did Pilate see Jesus as a threat to his position? Did he see through the manipulative words of the religious leaders? What finally persuaded Pilate to release Barabbas and condemn Jesus?
Family Time:
- What was the accusation that was written about Jesus and hung over His head on the cross? Was it true? (verse 37)
- What happened in the land from the sixth hour (noon) to the ninth hour (3 pm)? (verse 45)
- What did Jesus cry out? Why did He say this? (Parents, this is a good time to explain how Jesus took the wrath of God against sin for us! He was rejected so that we could be accepted!) (verse 46)
When Jesus died, the veil was ripped in two from top to bottom. Why is that important? (Note: The veil was very thick, and no one was allowed to go passed it into the Holy of Holies where God’s presence would come, except the High priest. “Common” people could never come in. But all of that changed when Jesus died and made a way for ALL to come near to the Father!)
- After they put Jesus’ dead body in the tomb, what did they do to the tomb? Why? (verses 62-66)
