Read Song of Solomon 1
Think About It:
The Song of Solomon provides us a beautiful image of the unity between the Bride of Christ (His Church) and Jesus. It reveals God’s love for us, and since He created intimacy in relationship, we see it as holy and good when enjoyed within the bounds of marriage. (Revelation 2:4 reminds us to return to our first love and in Matthew 22:37, Jesus tells us to “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” In Exodus and Deuteronomy, God tells us to have no other gods before Him – that is, to celebrate our love for Him above all else.)
The Song of Solomon is often read at the beginning of the celebration of the Jewish Passover as a reminder that God’s covenant is not just words and laws, but a relationship of passionate love. God is love, so the words He gives us are really for our own benefit to learn to love Him more as our relationship with Him develops and grows deeper throughout our lifetime. As you read through Chapter one, imagine Jesus and His love for you. In verse six, the new bride admits she is not worthy of His love and repents for neglecting her own “vineyard”.
- In what areas of your life have you neglected being fruitful for the LORD? Talk to Him about that for a few minutes and listen for His loving response as you determine to develop a deeper relationship with Him today and spend more time with Him. As we learn to love Him more, we will become better at loving one another.
