Read 1 Kings 2
Think About It:
- David’s dying instructions to Solomon warned that he follow Moses’ law or face the ruin of the nation. He also had named men: Joab, Adonijah, Barzillai, Shimei, and Abiathar that should be executed, rewarded and banished. Why would he give these instructions? What has God asked you to eliminate to maintain fellowship with Him?
- Adonijah tried to use Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba, for his plan to gain the throne. Solomon knew about it and signed Adonijah’s death notice. Think carefully about your motives when making friends. Are they to gain power or status?
- After Joab had been executed and Abiathar had been banished, Solomon replaced Benaiah, as the new commander of the army and Zadok, as the new priest. Because Joab and Abiathar were in cahoots with Adonijah, they lost their positions. What could jeopardize your “position”?
- Shimei gave his word he would not leave Jerusalem, knowing if he did he would be killed. He thought he had good reason to leave. What was it? He paid for it with his life. When do you think it is okay to go back on your word? Are you willing to pay the price?
