Read I John 2
Think About It:
The love of God is perfected within the one who obeys God’s Word (verse 5) … continuing to follow Jesus by obeying God’s Word causes His love within us to be perfected! As you walk through life knowing Jesus more and more, your love for your Heavenly Father grows and your love for other people grows. But verse 15 tells us not to love “the world”, that is the way of the unbelieving world… (verse 16) “for all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.” These three are the seeds from which all sin originates. Give God thanks for the promise of eternal life and the anointing of Holy Spirit (verse 20), who teaches us all things. Ask His forgiveness for any of those three things in your life.
Family Time:
- In verses 3-5, how do we know that we love God? (This does not mean trying to be good enough by following the law or a set of rules. It does mean living in obedience to the Lord and His word and His commands. A true sign of loving someone is obedience, submission, and seeking to please that one more than any other!)
- In verses 15-17, lust means a longing or desire (especially for what is forbidden). Do you chase after whatever your flesh/body wants? Or try to get whatever looks good to your eyes? Or do you seek after things that promote YOU… make YOU look good? The Word of God tells us that those things are wrong things to chase after and they are not of God. If we love the things of the world, we do not have the love of God in us. All the earthly things are passing away. All the things of God will be forever.
- What/who do you love? What/who are you chasing after? Use these verses and the others we just read above (3-5) to check your heart. Pray together!
