Read Proverbs 25
Think About It:
- More than 20 different proverbs are in this chapter. Anyone of them is helpful. For example in verses 6-7: humility; verse 16: moderation; verse 17: friendship (don’t wear out your welcome), etc.
- A couple verses seem to suggest retaliation (verses 21-22). Heaping coals on someone’s head may even sound like something we’d like to do at times. A further study shows the meaning to be good for evil. An Egyptian custom for showing repentance was to carry a dish of burning coals on your head. The idea, of doing good to your enemy, was so he might repent of the evil he did. How do you repay evil with good? It isn’t always easy, but it’s the wise thing to do.
- Choose one of the other verses and extract its wisdom for yourself.
Family Time:
- What should you do for your enemy? (verses 21-22)
- To what is one that has no self-control compared? (verse 28)
