Read Psalm 81-82
Think About It:
- Psalm 81 was a holiday hymn that celebrated the exodus from Egypt. It told of God’s goodness versus the rebellion and waywardness of Israel. God instituted Israel’s holy days/celebrations to remind the nation of God’s great miracles, His greatness, holiness and His faithfulness. Times of rejoicing should renew and refresh us and give us strength for the daily struggles of life. Think about the holidays that we celebrate: Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving; does the way you celebrate revolve around worshiping God for His goodness to you? Or are the spiritual aspects of these holidays surpassed by gift giving, the arrival of Spring, a good meal and football games? What changes could you make?
- Psalm 81 contains a warning from God, obedience would be rewarded with blessings beyond imagination. What response did God receive and what was the result of Israel’s actions?
- The “gods” referred to in Psalm 82 were the judges and rulers of Israel. They were called this because they represented God in executing judgment. John 10:34-36, records Jesus using this scripture to defend His claim to be the Son of God. What were these rulers and judges charged with doing?
