Read Job 5
Think About It:
- Who did Eliphaz think Job was asking for help? Other gods?
- Eliphaz assumes Job is wicked and must accept the Lord’s correction. (The Lord’s correction was a part of the Jewish custom.) Are we like Eliphaz, giving advice, but finding out it doesn’t apply and really isn’t helpful? Should we be more prayerful giving out advice?

Memory Verse: Job 10:12
- While Job was in a severe trial, Eliphaz believes he knows exactly what is going on with Job. In Job 5:17, Eliphaz is speaking to Job, believing it is Job’s sin that has caused his suffering, yet Job 1:1 tells us that Job was blameless and upright. Although what Eliphaz speaks could be truth, he does not realize that God had a purpose for Job’s trials and there is no indication that the purpose was a punishment for sin. Eliphaz’s careless words bring an even greater trial upon Job.
- The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Can you see how well-meaning Christians can actually bring harm to a person through their words?
- Is it possible that sometimes we should be encouraging our friends when in a hard time instead of trying to scold them?
