Read 2 Samuel 20
Think About It:
- Campbell Morgan sees the phrase, “We have no share in David, nor do we have an inheritance in the son of Jesse”as an effective slogan promoted by Sheba. “The story should teach us that popular and plausible catchwords ought to be received and acted upon with great caution.” We hear these popular catchwords in the world all around us today. We are seduced by soundbites that saturate social media and call us to division. How carefully and cautiously do you consider the words of others before you dismiss them or buy into them? Does the Word of God and prayer filter your beliefs?
- What kind of man is Joab, what character traits do you see in him? What do you think motivates his actions?
- Are there areas of your life in which your actions are motivated by your own desires, rather than by the will of God?
Family Time:
- Who was the man that rebelled against David? (verse 1)
- After Absalom died – killed by Joab – Amassa was made general in place of Joab. This made Joab angry. While they were chasing Sheba, the rebel, Joab ran into Amassa. How did Joab get revenge?
- Do you think Joab made the right choice?
- What does this tell you about Joab’s character?
- Joab got the job done but he did not obey authority. Do you think that was okay?
- Just because someone is in charge does not mean they have good character. Think about areas where you are in charge – as an older sibling, in school, as a parent. Ask God to help you be a good leader with good character. Not like Joab.
