Read Genesis 45
Think About It:
This was an official matter. All the officials were present, but Joseph did not want them there to settle this long-standing family matter. Joseph cried in anguish. The simple statement, “I am Joseph” exploded like a thunderclap in their ears and their hearts. His brothers were terrified. It was his brother’s fault that he had been separated from his father and his family all those years. But in that moment, Joseph had a release. Joseph made the realization of why the Lord let this happen. His anguish was turned into understanding of the perfect plan of the Heavenly Father. Joseph was “Lord of all of Egypt” and can provide for his beloved family – and to see his own father again! His next words were from a loving and forgiving heart! Yes, they were guilty, yet he told them not to dwell on their sins but what God has done for all of them – He overworked every evil intention for the good. Joseph embraced his brothers and kissed them, especially Benjamin. His brothers talked with him – they would not talk to him when he was a child. Joseph freely forgave them.
- What would have happened if Joseph did not forgive them and just punished his brothers?
- Is there bitter pain in your family?
- Is there something you need to release and then enjoy the love and reunion the Heavenly Father desires for all families?
Family Time:
- Who did Joseph believe really sent him to Egypt?
- Was Joseph still angry with his brothers for what they had done to him?
- How would you feel in this situation? What would you do?
- Do you see with “Kingdom eyes” as Joseph did? Can you put aside your discomfort or your anger in order for God’s plan to go forward? This may mean forgiving your brother or sister in order to show them God’s love. Or it may mean letting someone have your seat in the lunchroom so they will know you care about them. “Kingdom eyes” see that people coming into God’s Kingdom is more important than having everything go your way.
