Read Exodus 34
Think About It:
Moses cut the replacement tablets and brought them to the Lord alone, on top of Mt. Sinai. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with Moses and called out His own Name Yahweh, then proclaimed the Greatness of His attributes. This made Moses bow to the ground and worship his Lord. Faith comes by hearing and receiving God’s Word, so Moses by faith asked God to forgive the people. He pleaded for the Lord to “pardon our iniquity and our sin” and restore His promised blessings to them. The fact that God renewed the covenant is evidence that He forgave His people and gave them a new beginning. But God also repeated the essential elements of the covenant, especially the laws about idolatry. There could be no compromise, no idolatry, no agreements with the people of the land, no intermarriage, no joining their feasts, or adopting their pagan ways. It was important for Israel from the very beginning to drive them out of the promised land. For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is a Jealous, is a jealous God. You must observe my feasts: The Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks of the first fruits, and the Feast of Ingathering. Three times a year your men shall appear before the Lord, the Lord God of Israel. You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leaven, nor shall the sacrifice of the Feast of Passover be left to morning. All that open the womb are mine, every first born of livestock. All the first born of donkey you shall redeem, and the first born of your sons you shall redeem. Keep the Sabbath holy, no work. Moses was there 40 days and nights writing these words on the tablet, neither eating nor drinking. Moses saw a glimpse of God’s glory. Is it any wonder that he had a shining face? When he returned, the people were afraid of him. He spoke with them and gave them the commandments. Afterword he wore a veil. He would remove the veil when he would speak to the Lord until he would come out and tell the children of Israel what he had been commanded.
- Do you shine to your family, friends, and co-workers?
- No compromise. Have you let any modern-day idols into your life?
- Are you happy to keep his decrees?
Family Time:
Read Exodus 34 with your family. After you have read this chapter work on the scripture verse together and then read and discuss the questions.
Memory Verses:
Older Children: Exodus 34:30-32
Younger Children: Exodus 34:30
The people could see by the radiance of Moses’ face that he had been in the presence of God Almighty. They were afraid. Think about the following questions and discuss them together.
- When the people saw the glowing face of Moses why were they afraid?
- Have you ever been afraid of the presence of God because you have been doing wrong and don’t know how to make it right? We sometimes try to avoid God because we have sins in our lives that stand between us and God. Talk about this with your family and pray together for God’s forgiveness.
