Read Mark 12
Think About It:
- The first 12 verses in Mark 12 tell a story about a certain man that planted a vineyard (God the Father). He set a hedge of divine protection around it and gave farmers (religious leaders) responsibility to maintain the vineyard (Israel). He later sent His prophets and priests to return with the harvest, but the leaders beat them and sent them away empty-handed. Eventually, God sent His one and only Son, Jesus. But the religious leaders thought they could gain ownership if they got rid of the heir, so they killed Him. This is God’s plan of redemption as He raised Jesus from the dead. Verse 11 says it was “the LORD’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” God is overjoyed that we are His children now, too! Spend time thanking God for including us in His plan of redemption.
- Verse 17 gives us Jesus’ insight as He answers the trick question of the religious leaders, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s—and to God the things that are God’s.” In other words, pay your taxes and give your tithe. And verse 43 shows us how the offerings of poor people become true sacrifices, as they have less to give. God sees that! Do you give with a cheerful heart? Do you ever give sacrificially? Have you asked God how and where He wants you to sow into His kingdom?
- Verse 24 reveals how we make mistakes and become misled or deceived—when we do not know the scriptures or the power of God. In other words, if you know what the Bible says and believe it (and apply it!), then you know the power of God and you keep in step with Him, without stumbling. Verses 30-31 are a perfect example, “Love the LORD thy God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.” Study to show yourself approved.
Family Time:
- In verse 17, how did Jesus answer the question, “Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar or not?”
- How was it that Jesus said the widow cast in more than all, when she cast in only two mites? (verse 44)
