Read Isaiah 22
Think About It:
Isaiah pointed out two particular sins that would cause Judah to decline and ultimately go into captivity in Babylon. First is the unbelief of the people (Isaiah 22:1-14). The popular philosophy was, “Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die” (22:13). But the prophet did not participate in the parties, for he saw a day coming when death and destruction would reign in the City of David. The people did everything but trust the LORD (verse 11). Instead of feasting, they should’ve been fasting, putting on sackcloth, and pulling out their hair in grief (verse 12; Ezra 9:3; James 4:8-10). God had sent the nation many prophets to warn them, but the people would not listen. Now it was too late, their sin could not be forgiven because their hearts were hard. Judah would go into captivity, God’s word to Isaiah would be fulfilled.
The second sin that caused Juda to decline was the unfaithfulness of the leaders (22:15-25). Had the leaders been faithful to the LORD and called the people to repent, there might have been hope, but too many of the leaders were like Shebna, thinking only of themselves. God judged Shebna by demoting him (he became “secretary” according to 36:3), disgracing him, and deporting him. Eventually, he was thrown “like a ball” into a far off our country, where he died (Assyria).
John Snyder (Behold your God) taught us that pride, unbelief, and selfishness are ruling spirits that are the root of our downfall. I see all three here.
Family Time:
- Google David Guzik’s study guide for Isaiah 22. Read and really absorb the symbolism. Read how Jerusalem made all the wrong preparations for the coming battle.
- As a family, relate what some of your battles are and what perhaps you were lacking prior to engaging in this battle. Was your armor already on? Were you perhaps negligent in some areas? God is the God of restoration, so remember there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, but as a family learn how to prepare before the battle!
- Also note… when Shebna was removed from power, all who “hung” on him were also cut off! Kids, who you hang out with does matter! Are your friends a good influence?
