Read John 14
Think About It:
- Jesus is still with the apostles at the last supper in this chapter. He was talking with them about His death and resurrection and His eventual departure. He was going to leave. The apostles were afraid and didn’t understand. Jesus encouraged them that they would be with Him in eternity. He talked with them together and individually as they questioned Him. Thomas was a detail person, he wanted to know how to get to where Jesus was going—a map or something. Jesus said to him (and us) that He is the way, the Truth, and the Life. Our relationship with Him is how we get there. The reason Jesus came was for His Father and for us. He spent significant time with His disciples teaching them and reassuring them before He went to the cross. He wants us to be with Him forever!
- John recorded Jesus’ emphasis on the Holy Spirit in this chapter. He called Him the Helper, or Comforter, the Spirit of Truth. Jesus told them He would not leave them as orphans, but the Holy Spirit would come to them in His place. He said if we love Him, we will keep His commandments. In fact, He said this is how we can know who loves Jesus and who doesn’t, verses 21 and 23-24. It’s only by the Holy Spirit that we can do these things. The Holy Spirit is available! Thank you, Jesus! And, thank you Holy Spirit!
