Read Luke 23
Think About It:
- Luke 23:2tells us the accusations of the chief priests and scribes towards Jesus. They said Jesus provoked the people to riot, that He told them not to pay their taxes, and that He declared Himself the Christ, a King. Pilate was unconvinced, so the accusers repeated and strengthened their third charge: He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning in Galilee to this place (Luke 23:5). How did Jesus respond to these accusations? How did He respond to Herod’s questioning? How do you respond when accusations come your way?
- Interesting that Pilate and Herod became friends the day Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate in verse 12. They now had common ground…their opposition to Jesus. What does this example tell you about human nature?
- Verse 28-31 is the last connected discourse of the Savior before He died. What was Jesus telling them?
Family Time:
- Did Jesus actually say He was King of the Jews? (verse 3)
- The Jews had a choice to release Jesus or a horrible criminal named Barabbas. They chose Barabbas. What did Jesus do that was worse than a murderer like Barabbas? Who were the Jews following? Who was in control of their hearts?
- A centurion was a Roman soldier. He would have been an enemy of Jesus. He was there to witness Jesus being put on the cross and dying. He saw all Jesus’ injuries. What did he say when Jesus died? (verse 47) Do you think the centurion was still an enemy of Jesus? What do you think changed his mind/heart?
