Overview of the Book of Luke Chapters 1-9

Read Luke 1
Think About It:
Luke is the only Gentile writer in the New Testament. Luke’s profession is a doctor and he writes as one. He’s writing of Christ’s manhood. The book begins and ends in song. This chapter is so familiar that you might hurry through it. Take your time. Linger over verses and see the newness of God’s Word. For example, in verse 6, who are ‘both’ and what attributes did they have?
- What would happen if Gabriel appeared and spoke to you? Zacharias didn’t believe his words. He was mute until the baby spoken of was eight days old. Have we been “muted” because of our unbelief? God isn’t hindered by our unbelief, only we are.
- Why was Zacharias able to speak months later at the naming of the baby? Could it be his obedience in naming the baby, John, as Gabriel had told him? Obedience has its rewards.
- What was the first thing he did after naming the child? What happened next? What was the second thing he did?
- What kinds of things do we keep in our hearts?
- It seems the Holy Spirit was busy touching and filling people in this chapter. See verses 15, 35, 41, 61 and 80.
Family Time:
- What was God’s plan for Zechariah and Elizabeth?
- When the baby was born, what did everyone think his name should be? What did they name their son?
- What was God’s plan for John?
- What is God’s plan for you?
