Read Matthew 5
Think About It:
- The chapter begins with the Sermon on the Mount and a new age. As was the custom, a teacher sat down to teach. Those interested in what he taught, climbed up to hear. How often do we climb up to hear what He’s teaching?
- All but the last verse begins with ‘Blessed’, which means happy. We should be happy when we obey God. Read the words that begin each verse. They take on a new meaning when seen the way God sees them. For example…poor in spirit doesn’t mean without the spirit, but a lack of depth of the spirit. And then see the blessing that follows.
- In verses 21-48, Jesus reveals His authority as He explains how the laws of the Kingdom (inward) go beyond the laws of Moses (outward). The subjects of murder, restitution and prayer, civil suits, adultery, divorce and remarriage, retaliation and love are covered. Isn’t it just like Jesus to end with love?
Family Time:
- Did you know that Matthew 5 is often referred to as the “Sermon on the Mount?” Why do you think that is?
- Did you catch how many times the word ‘blessed’ appeared in this passage? So, what is a blessing?
- What are some of the blessings in your life?
