Read Jeremiah 44
Think About It:
Many times, the Word of God is like a mirror – to help us reflect on our actions and see how the actions of those before us played out. This chapter makes me think of how many in the world have chosen not to listen to the Church, and blatantly done their own thing. Even though we don’t have the same gods they worshiped in Jeremiah’s day, we have things that distract us from loving God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Lesser things that take up our time and make us absent from the activities that would help us focus on God more. We are our own god, many times – we do what we want. Verse 28 says, “Yet a small number of My choosing who escape the sword will return from the land of Egypt (bondage) to the land of Judah (praise); and all the remnant of Judah who have gone to the land of Egypt to reside there will know whose words will stand, Mine or theirs.”
Take a few moments in reverent prayer and discuss with Him your thoughts about these people in Jeremiah’s day and how that compares to our life today. Are you walking away from things of bondage and toward a life filled with praise for His love and faithfulness to you? We know God’s Word stands to the end, so we can stand on His Word to us—and we must be faithful to continue to speak His truth to others, even when it seems they are not listening.
Family Time:
- Even when confronted with their sins, the people of Judah chose false gods over the Lord God. This was not because they didn’t know any better—this was willful rebellion. How do your parents respond when you make a mistake because you didn’t know better? How do they respond when you do know better and do it anyway?
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you stay in God’s Word and have a teachable spirit that allows Him to show you right from wrong in every situation.
