Read Jeremiah 19
Think About It:
- Why did God have Jeremiah bring some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests to the Valley of the Son of Hinnon before prophesying to them?
- Having come from the potter’s house (Jeremiah 18:1-11), God showed Jeremiah how the potter could mold clay again into a new shape if it should seem resistant. Here, the potter’s earthen flask is baked, hardened, and breakable. “If there is nothing so workable as a clay pot in the making, there is nothing so unalterable as the finished article. If it is wrong by then, that is that.” (Kidner) God tells Jeremiah to use the clay flask as an object lesson or illustration in verses 10-11. What does the clay flask symbolize or mean for Judah and Jerusalem?
Family Time:
- What would happen to the ears of those who heard about the judgment God was going to bring on Jerusalem? (verse 3)
- What was Jeremiah to do with the potter’s earthen bottle? (verses 1, 10-12)
