Read Ecclesiastes 8
Think About It:
- The author has found that in all his wisdom seeking, there were still questions about the meaning of life on this earth (death, the wicked flourishing, the good suffering, etc.). Do you question your meaning here on earth?
- The author determined to find what is the real value or interpretation of life. In his inability to control the wind and death, he was convinced “that the good life is reserved for the person who fears God, who lives reverently in His presence” (verses 12-13). This has nothing to do with wealth and power. What is he speaking of?
- We don’t always know and understand the ways of the Lord. We don’t know what is going on in the Heavenlies. That is where faith comes in. Do you have faith that the Lord is in control of every aspect of the believer’s life? How can you increase your faith?
Family Time:
- Re-read Chapter 8 in The Message translation (MSG) — online if necessary.
- Why do many people think they can get away with anything (verse 11)?
- What does 2 Peter 3:9 say about this? [The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.]
- Remember good is reserved for those who fear God (verses 12-13).
- When the happenings we see with our eyes on earth seem unfair or pointless, we must remember Isaiah 55:8 – For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, “declares the LORD.” As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways.
