Read Job 4
Think About It:
And the debate begins. Yesterday we read Job’s painful “why”? Today we hear the first part of Eliphaz’s rebuttal. It represents the normal thinking about God and suffering and our human condition. Eliphaz feels Job has been trusting in his own integrity. In simple terms—Job must have sinned.
- Have you ever been guilty of thinking like Eliphaz? If it is a trial of any kind, it must be the result of sin?
Family Time:
- Which friend speaks first?
- Are there any lies in verses 2-6?
- Are the words in verses 7-11 truthful? Does Eliphaz use truthful words to imply something untruthful about Job?
- Is it possible to mix together truth and untruth, or wrongly apply truth? (Did Satan quote scripture to Jesus when trying to tempt Him?)
- Are you ever tempted to mix truths you know about God with your own opinions on how that truth applies to your family or friends?
- Has anyone ever told you something that was a mixture of truth and untruth? Do you throw everything they say away, or do you seek the Lord for how to separate the two?
- If the Holy Spirit does not speak on his own authority but speaks only what he hears from God, what should we be careful to do when speaking as the voice of God?
