Read 1 Kings 8
Think About It:
- Why do you think David thought it was so important that God had a house on the earth even though He can’t be contained in all the heavens?
- In several parts of the prayer of dedication, Solomon describes something negative happening to Israel, each time because of their sin. Each time he asks God to forgive them if they turn from their sin. Describe the importance of repentance and how it is shown in each case.
- Imagine what it would have been like to have 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep sacrificed. How big of an ordeal do you think this would have been?
Family Time:
- This chapter is full of joy and excitement. The temple is ready, and the final items are brought and set into place. The ark of the covenant of the Lord is set in the most holy place of the temple. What happens in verses 10-11?
- In verse 23, Solomon declares that there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like the God of Israel. Talk about ways that God is so far above any other! (wisdom, strength…)
- Solomon was the wisest, richest king in all of history, and perhaps the most powerful as well. But in verse 54 we find him on his knees at the altar of the Lord, praying to the LORD. What can we learn from this about the way WE should act before the LORD?
