Read 1 Kings 1
Think About It:
Adonijah, the fourth son of David (Absalom was third), decided that he must be the next in line for the throne of Israel so he threw a large party to celebrate this decision. David knew that Solomon was God’s choice. It was important that they move quickly to prevent what could become a civil war. David set in motion a plan to publicly give up his throne and appoint and anoint Solomon as his replacement as the new king of Israel.
- Have you ever thought how rare it is for someone to willingly give up their power and position simply because they can see something beyond themselves?
Family Time:
- Adonijah was David’s fourth son. His older brothers were dead. He was next in line to be king. What did he do wrong? (verse 5)
- If Adonijah was next in line, why did the prophet Nathan say Solomon was to be king? (verse 13)
- What did David do when he was reminded of his promise to make Solomon king? (verse 35)
- What did Adonijah do when he heard Solomon was named king? (verse 50-51)
- Sometimes we don’t think about our actions and make bad choices. It is important that we realize our mistakes and seek forgiveness like Adonijah. When we do, we get to experience the gift of God’s mercy.
