Read 2 Samuel 23
Think About It:
- In verses 10 and 12, who is given credit for the victories of the mighty men? Why is this important?
- After David states his desire for the water from the well in Bethlehem, three of his men defy the Philistines and retrieve some of the water for him. David proceeds to pour it out. What do David’s words and actions tell us about (1) his original desire and request, 2) his willingness to deny himself such pleasure, and 3) his attitude toward his mighty men? Is there another “water” that comes from Bethlehem he may have been referring to?
- What does it say about the interactions between David and Uriah the Hittite that he is listed among David’s mighty men?
Family Time:
- In verses 3-4 God tells David what a good king must look like. List these attributes or qualities.
- Did David think he was always a good king according to God’s standards? (verse 5)
- Did God still make and keep a covenant (promise) with David even though David was not always perfect?
- Do you have to be perfect for God to make a promise with you?
We can all be as great as King David if we seek God fully and strive to be a people after God’s own heart.
