Read 2 Samuel 1
Think About It:
- Yesterday we read the true details of Saul’s death, so who is the man in verse 2? What is his motive for lying? He saw an opportunity for capital gain. It was customary for a king to reward good news (see 2 Samuel 4:10). He thought David would be overjoyed to discover the man who had been hunting him was dead. To make himself sound even more important, he even exaggerated some of his lies. To every question David asked, he added a few more lies. Those lies cost him his life. Is truth your standard?
- David’s lament in verses 19-27 show us the respect he held for Saul and the position God had placed him in. It also shows us the emotional pain he felt at the loss of a true bond of friendship. Jonathan was his encourager, his spiritual brother. From this we learn a painful truth—it does not matter what title we hold in life, we will all encounter trials and heartache. When they happen, we can choose to be made at God or we can choose to allow Him to comfort us as we heal. Will you allow God to hold you close as you travel your own path of hurt?
Family Time:
- What did David ask, and what did the Lord tell him?
- What principle can we learn from David’s example of inquiring of the Lord and following the Lord’s direction?
- Why do you think it is important not only to ask the Lord for guidance but also to follow His direction?
- When have you asked for and received direction from the Lord? What were you prompted to do? What was the result as you acted on that prompting?
