Read 1 Samuel 21
Think About It:
- Why did David lie to Ahimelech? Was he justified in his lying?
FACT: The tabernacle of the LORD had a table that held twelve loaves of bread, symbolizing God’s continual fellowship with Israel. The importance and meaning of the bread are found in its name. Literally, showbread means “bread of faces.” It is bread associated with, and to be eaten before, the face of God. F.B. Meyer calls the showbread “presence-bread.” To eat the showbread was to eat God’s bread in God’s house as a friend and a guest of the LORD, enjoying His hospitality. In that culture eating together formed a bond of friendship that was permanent and sacred. The showbread was always to be fresh. Ahimelech would give David the old showbread, which had been taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in its place. God wants our fellowship with Him, our time before His face, to be fresh.
- Ahimelech was going against priestly custom in giving David old showbread. Was he going against the Word of God? (See Matthew 12:1-8.)
Family Time:
In this time, there were things only the priests could have, or do. The Holy Spirit would be on some, but not on many at the same time. Only the priests could go in to the holiest place.
Now, through Jesus Christ, scripture says he has made “us” priests and kings to God His Father. WE get to go in to the most holy place with the Lord, and even more, His Holy Spirit comes to live in ALL who belong to Him!
He feeds us with the bread of His word. He washes us with the blood of Jesus and with the cleansing of the Word. He has given us so much privilege because of Jesus!
Let’s spend some time thanking Him for all He has given us!
