Read 1 Samuel 7
Think About It:
- Samuel told the Israelites, “If you return to the LORD with all your hearts, thenput away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” What two aspects of repentance does Samuel speak to the Israelites? What is the significance of the order?
- What was the significance of gathering together at Mizpah? (See Genesis 31:49 and Judges 20:1)
- Why were the Philistines suddenly afraid of the Israelites?
Family Time:
Memory Verse: As you read this chapter, choose your own memory verse.
The people of Israel left the ark in Kirjath Jearim for 20 years!
- Why do you think they left it there for so long? (Fear? Forgetfulness? Shame?)
- Samuel calls the people to repent from sin and to again follow the Lord. In verse 3, Samuel tells the Israelites to do something to repent. What is it they needed to do?
Have you ever replaced your devotion to God with other gods or idols in your life? Discuss this with your family, pray about removing those things that replace God in your life.
- When the Philistines attacked, how did it turn out for Israel?
